Steel and Metal Construction

The task of steel construction is the production and construction of buildings and other installations made of steel. Typical fields of production are steel building constructions (multi-floor buildings, halls, masts and towers), industrial buildings (crane rails, boiler houses, conveyor belt bridges), smokestacks and containers, steel bridges and crane constructions. All of these structures are subject to severe safety requirements and, with the exception of mobile steel constructions, are to be built according to legal construction regulations. All kinds of movable constructions like cranes and hydraulic steel structures are subject to the regulations of the technical control authorities. Advantages like a high degree of creative and constructional freedom, flexibility of use, short construction periods and ecological benefits assure, that steel construction has a considerable share in the total construction volume.
The task of metal construction is to plan and produce room closing elements for all kinds of buildings, including metal roofs, metal facades, windows, doors, light roofs and domes made of steel, glass or aluminium, with high demands considering design and function. To an increasing extent stainless high grade steel is being used for facades.
Out of semi-finished products like shaped metal, sheet metal and extruded sections the products of steel and metal construction are manufactured with the help of modern technological procedures for metal processing

The program is devided into a basic and a main study period. During the basic studies mainly the foundations of mathematics and natural sciences as well as technical knowledge are being taught, accompanied by specific technical basics of steel- and metal construction, including CAD
this period is completed with the intermediate diploma

The education in steel construction deals with the calculation and design of typical building elements as well as the planning, construction, fabrication and erection of essential steel construction supports. The metal construction training contains static and physical calculation as well as design, construction and fabrication of typical products of this field. Basics about solid and wood construction will complete the program. In addition the first level for the degree Europeen Welding Engineer (EWE) is passed with the completion of the program
The practice-related education includes extensive exercise courses and practical training
The main study period is completed with the presentation of the diploma thesis and ist defence
There are three possible professional areas for diploma engineers of metal and steel construction. Since they combine skills of planning, construction and welding (the latter after an additional seminar), a job in one of these fields is almost guaranteed

Matriculation
Basic Study Period (first to fourth semester, completed with intermediat diploma)
Main Study Period ( Fifth to eights semester)
Industry Internship (during the sixth semester)
Diploma Thesis (during the eights semester)

Degree: Diploma Engineer FH

The areas of application for graduates are manifold. In companies of steel and metal construction it is possible to work in the fields of construction, work scheduling, production and erection. Within engineering offices special emphasis is given to design and planning activities
